Audio Transfer Services

Stilson Video Services can transfer several obsolete consumer formats including vinyl records, reel-to-reel tapes, 8-track tapes, audio cassettes, micro cassettes, and DAT. Although we cannot transfer recordings with an active copyright, there were home recordings or non-copyrighted works created on all these media. We can transfer these to a digital format so they will no longer degrade.

We normally edit after recording to offer you the clearest audio from your tapes or vinyl.

Popular Consumer Formats We Transfer:

Vinyl Records

Disc records, later known as 78s, became popular around the turn of the century. In the 1940s, the 45s and 33s replaced them and remained in use for decades. Even today they enjoy a resurgence among audiophiles who prefer their sound.

Reel-to-Reel

Reel-to-Reel magnetic tape was popular in the consumer market from the mid 50s to mid 70s. Some still prefer the sound today over modern digital music.

8-Track

8-Track tape was popular from the mid 60s to early 80s. It was unique in that in played in a continuous loop that never needed rewinding.

Audio Cassettes

Cassette tapes came on the scene in 1963 and became more popular than the 8-track format. They remained popular until the early 2000s.

Microcassettes

Microcassettes consist of two main varieties which vary slightly in size. They were introduced in the late 60s primarily for voice recording in dictation and answering machines.

DAT
DAT.JPG

DAT, or Digital Audio Tape was introduced by Sony in 1987. It never replaced the standard analog tape in the consumer market primarily because of cost and only saw limited success in professional recording and data storage
